I will not let injury define my life

Today, 21/04/2018, while bed ridden and watching Yes Theory, I write my bucket list.

Let me start from the beginning…

In early 2010 when I was 15, I started experiencing back pain – mostly brought on after physical activity. After visiting an Osteopath numerous times and being treated for a pinched nerve, the pain did not go away. One netball game the pain was so excruciating that I fell to the ground in tears – this was the start of something a little more serious than a pinched nerve.

I was referred to a specialist and sent for an MRI scan, which revealed 3 out of my 5 lumber discs had herniated. This essentially means they had almost melted out from between the vertebrae, and were no longer properly supporting my spine. I was told for the following two years at a minimum, I would not be able to participate in any physical activity that involved impact on my spine. No running, no contact sport, no dancing, no soccer, no netball, no hockey, no nothing… So, I was essentially limited to swimming and walking.

Fast forward a few years, and my recovery had been good. I had the occasional pain, but nothing too major. In late 2016, I ended up in hospital unable to walk after doing a squat jump at the gym. I was dosed up with endone, and sent on my merry way, no additional scans, no treatment. My recovery from that was a painful couple of months, managed with painkillers and restricted sleeping positions.

Now, yesterday, I have done it again. This time, by getting off of the lounge… I’m not exactly sure how… Maybe I twisted in a strange way… Regardless, I am now in bed, trying not to move, in fear of pain…

I am constantly living my life in fear of injury. In fear of hurting myself. But I don’t want this to define me, or my choices. Which is why, today, I will be writing my bucket list. 100 things I want to do before I die, or am completely incapable of walking.

I am blessed to be given the life that I have been given, and so many other people will not and have not been given as many amazing opportunities as I have. I will live my life to the fullest, and you can read about it here.

Hopefully it will inspire at least one of you to do the same.
