5 things I wasn’t prepared for when I started planning a wedding

1. Everyone has an opinion, and they aren’t afraid to tell you

It’s true. You could have every little detail planned perfectly, down to the length of each flower stem, and there will always be someone that will tell you how you could do it better. Or easier. Or cheaper.

There will be people that will tell you what they think you should wear, what they think your table decorations should look like, or what they think your invitations should say.

But at the end of the day, it’s your wedding and you should do/wear/say whatever you want.

2. You won’t always agree with your partner

Just like everyone else, your partner will have an opinion. Unlike everyone else, their opinion actually matters.

So no matter how much you want to ride a down the isle on a cow, or have a bunny as a ring barer, sometimes you’ll have to compromise.

Sadly, there will be no animals at our wedding.

3. Shopping for your bridesmaids dress can be harder than shopping for your own

When shopping for your own dress, all you have to think about is yourself. How the dress fits your body, if you like it, if you’re happy in it.

In the perfect world, everyone would look great in everything. But, this isn’t a perfect world. And not every dress suits everyone. Which is why the more bridesmaids you have, the harder it’s going to be to find a dress that everyone is happy with. One will like it, and the other won’t.

I picked the colour and said pick your own style. This seemed to work… Eventually.

4. The stars don’t always align, and you may have to compromise

Sometimes the venue you want isn’t available when the photographer is, or the makeup artist, or the celebrant, or the DJ. So you need to think about which one means the most to you, and sadly, let the other one go.

5. People want to be involved more than you think

I’m the type of person that tends not to ask for help. Not because I don’t need help, but because I don’t want to put the other person out.

I’ve found people like to help, more than you’d think! Especially mums and aunts, so try and give them little jobs, it will make them feel involved.
